Introductions to Meditation-Dhyana

Meditation helps to nourish your mind, body, and soul. It helps you to have a better understanding of the three dimensions of human life i.e. mind, body, and soul.

Meditation also helps you to understand the 3 L’s of human life i.e. live, love, and laugh. It helps you to get rid of unnecessary emotions such as stress, sorrows, and pain.

Meditation helps you to understand your inner-self. It makes you aware of your emotions and your surroundings. It also helps you to develop a positive attitude toward life and changes the way you perceive things around you.

You could also say that meditation is a yoga practice and yoga is a meditational practice. You could practice yoga and that way you’ll practice meditation and vice-versa.

Meditation is a healthy practice of life that helps you relieve stress and anxiety, helps you focus on good things, and let go of the unnecessary emotions. It might as well help you live a long and healthy life.

What is Meditation?

Before we discuss our point of view on what meditation is, let’s go through some of the definitions of meditation by famous personalities and teachers of life.

  • “When you are not doing anything at all – bodily mentally on no level – when all activities has ceased and you simply are, just being, that’s what meditation is” – by Osho
  • “Meditation is about seeing your natural state of your consciousness.” – by Dalai Lama
  • “When we say meditation we’re referring Dhyan. When we say meditation, you need to understand this is not something that you can do because you can become meditative, you can become meditation, you can never do meditation. It’s a certain quality.” – by Sadhguru

I believe that you now have a clear understanding of what meditation is. But if you’re still feeling dizzy on the matter then let me make things easy for you to understand.

In simple words, it is the art of doing nothing at all, that includes you stop thinking, concentrating, or contemplating. It is a state of utter relaxation.

While most of the meditational practices do not require any prior experiences and are not bound by poses, some meditations however are more complex. They require prior experience in meditation as well as a good teacher to practice.

Types of Meditation

Wide variations of meditational practices are popular among people. They serve different purposes and are thus practiced by different groups of individuals.

The Mindfulness Meditation, for example, serves as a wake-up call for many. It helps to understand one’s emotions and thought processes without judging them. Similarly, the Kundalini Dhyana is practiced by people in order to wake up the dormant power lying within one’s spine.

I have listed some of the most popular and effective meditation techniques below. Going through each one of them individually will give you a better understanding of the matter. It will also help you to find a meditational practice that suits you.

1. Metta Prayer or Lovingkindnes

Lovingkindness meditation, also known as Metta prayer is a meditational practice to help them cultivate positive attitude, love, and kindness towards each and every living being. That includes one’s enemies and foes as well.

It starts by blessing oneself first and it gradually expands outward, wishing good health, good fortune, and good life for the people around you. And it keeps growing. Eventually, you wish for love and kindness for the people of the entire world.

Sharing Love

This form of meditation shows love and kindness is for all, and one needs to practice the art of forgiveness and love throughout his/her life. The goal here is to make the world a better place to live in.

If everyone of us were to practice lovekindness, the world would certainly become a better place to live in.

2. Body Scan or Progressive Relaxation

Body scan or progressive relaxation is a form of meditation that involves you to look or scan your entire body from within for areas of tension. The goal here is to gently bring out the tension that is building up in different parts of the body and release.

This form of meditation helps in relaxation and promotes the feeling of wellbeing. It also helps to enhance your sleep quality by promoting peace of mind. You can practice progressive relaxation meditation during your free time at home or office.

An early morning meditation, however, would prove to be more fruitful. So, try scheduling your time of meditation for better results.

3. Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is a form of meditation technique that involves you concentrating on your breath when you breathe-in and breathe-out. It helps you to have a better understanding of your emotions and your actions related to your emotions. You become more aware of your surrounding and it helps to make you alert.

When you practice mindfulness, you only work on your consciousness and do not question back. You can only experience your emotions within you but cannot react or respond to them. You do not question whether they are good or bad. All you do is become conscious of your emotions and your surroundings by focusing on your breathing.

Walking Meditation: Walking meditation is a type of mindfulness meditation that can be done while walking. All you have to do is deliberately bring your attention to your feet. And as you walk, feel the ground beneath you. It is a great way of developing your senses.

4. Mindful Breathing or Breath Awareness Meditation

Mindful breathing is also known as breath awareness meditation. It is basically a breathing meditation that requires you to focus on your breathing. You can practice mindful breathing by sitting comfortably in meditation cushions and closing your eyes gently.

You could also choose to keep your eyes open if you prefer to. But it is much easier to concentrate with your eyes closed.

Once you’ve seated yourself comfortably, take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and exhale. Do not put too much pressure while breathing in and breathing out. In the meantime, focus on breathing as naturally as possible.

Try to control your thoughts by concentrating on your breathing. It will take some time but you will be able to concentrate on your breathing soon. We focus on breathing because the physical sensation of breathing is always present.

5. Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is derived from Kundalini. It is defined as the dormant form of energy that lies at the base of the spine until it is activated with the help of yoga.

Kundalini is also believed to be power associated with the divine feminine. With the help of kundalini yoga, the dormant energy can be channeled upward through chakras. This process is called spiritual uplifting.

Kundalini yoga.
Kundalini yoga

Kundalini yoga involves difficult steps that need mastering. There are a lot of risks of things going wrong while practicing kundalini yoga. It might have a negative effect on your body. Thus it is very risky and one needs to find a good teacher to practice it.

If you’re an expert in other forms of meditation, you could easily practice kundalini yoga with some guidance. But if you’re new to meditation and have just started to meditate, it is advised that you first master another form of meditation.

Kundalini yoga helps to lose weight

There are certainly many benefits of kundalini yoga if you practice properly that is. One of the benefits of kundalini yoga being, it helps you to lose weight. If you’re dedicated enough to practice kundalini yoga on a regular basis, it can help you shape your emotional, mental, and spiritual self and result in permanent weight loss.

Kundalini yoga works on your thyroid gland which results in weight loss. The most powerful and common kundalini yoga practices to lose weight are shoulder stand and plow pose with a breath of fire.

6. Zen Meditation

Zen meditation is also known as Buddhist meditation and was first developed in China. It is an ancient Buddha discipline or tradition dating back to 7th century China. It soon extended to other countries such as Japan and Korea.

The word ‘Zen’ is actually derived from the Chinese word Ch’an which is derived from the Sanskrit language term ‘Dhyana’ meaning to meditate with no mind.

Meditation music bowl.

Unlike mindfulness or mindful breathing, this technique of meditation does not involve you being aware of your emotions or your surrounding, nor your breathing. It is solely the art of doing nothing at all.

You sit back or lay down comfortably closing your eyes. You then discard all of your thought processings one by one until you reach a point where none are left. It is then your thoughts go blank and you achieve complete peace of mind.

It is an effective method to cope up with depression and your feeling of anxiety.

There are no prerequisites to zen meditation. This form of meditation can be practiced by everyone, including those new to meditation. It can be performed with your eyes semi-open or closed.

7. Mantra or Transcendental Meditation

Transcendent meditation, also known as mantra meditation was first introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It is one of the most widely practiced and most widely researched meditation techniques. It refers to a specific form of silent mantra meditation.

The transcendent meditation technique involves the use of ‘Mantra Japa’ for around 20 minutes at a time twice a day. It is best to practice early in the morning and in the evening. It is a non-religious method for reducing stress, relaxation, and self-development.

What is Analytical Meditation?

Meditation has different approaches and types. You can choose to meditate in a spiritual way(Dhyana). Or you can choose to meditate with mindfulness. Or you can meditate with reasoning together with mindfulness(analytical meditation).

Thus analytical meditation is a meditation practice where one chooses to question one’s thoughts and emotions while practicing mindfulness. It is a great way of training your mind.

While the traditional or spiritual meditation(Dhyan) focuses on being thoughtless(doing nothing at all, utter relaxation) and mindfulness focuses on you being aware of your consciousness.

The analytical meditation takes mindfulness practice to the next level by implementing the reasoning method along with mindfulness. It helps to focus on a particular subject matter in hand in order to have a better understanding of the outcomes.

Here’s a definition of analytical meditation for you to have a better understanding of the subject matter on hand.

  • “Analytic meditation uses reasoning to gain insight into how the mind works and particularly the nature of the way the mind constructs ourselves as an entity.”– by Dr. Richard Davidson

Analytical meditation helps to understand human emotions. It gives you an insight into how your behavior is linked with your emotions.

There are certain steps involved in practicing analytical meditation. The basic analytical meditation steps, include you sitting with correct meditation postures, crossed leg with a straight back.

Meditation and Mindfulness

Meditation and mindfulness are two completely different terms. While the first one refers to the awareness of nothing, mindfulness meditation practice refers to the awareness of something. In that sense, you could say meditation contradicts mindfulness.

However, there are some similarities to mindfulness and meditation. Now you might wonder how is that even possible? Well, hypothetically speaking it is not possible. But if you observe the technicality of the matter, it is possible. Let me explain how.

Mindfulness meditation guide.
Mindfulness

While meditation is the state of doing nothing at all, you can still keep your consciousness alive in the process. This helps you to stay focused and alert of your senses while shutting down your thoughts completely.

When you practice mindfulness, it involves you focusing on a particular thing. Such as focusing and count your breath. Doing so helps to direct your attention to your surroundings.

You stay aware and completely focused without questioning your thoughts or reasoning whether they are good or bad. It helps you to manage your emotions and physical sensations known as mindful eating.

So, we could say that mindfulness and meditation go hand in hand. Awareness of breath is one way of practicing mindfulness.

Meditation and Yoga

“Yoga is about determining who you are, it’s about determining what you want to be, changing the very fundamentals of one’s existence. Yoga is a system and needs much more involvement than any other things that we do, which are merely an expression of who we are.” – By Sadhguru

Different people have different opinions on meditation and yoga. Some consider meditation as a part of yoga. While others consider yoga to be a form of meditation. But no matter what opinions people hold or how contradicting their thoughts might be, they are certainly interrelated with each other.

Yoga usually incorporates deep breathing exercises, together with meditation and poses that are specially designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress. You could also say that yoga is a form of breathing meditation since yoga incorporates breathing exercises.

Yoga Tips: If you are someone who has a problem sitting on the floor for a long period of time, use yoga mats. It helps you to sit comfortably during your meditation exercises.

It is important that you first make yourself comfortable and then begin meditating. That way you could hold your breath for a longer period of time which is important for yoga. Foam rollers are also used by people to enhance their yoga experience.

Why Practice Yoga?

Now that you understand what yoga is, you might be wondering why practice yoga in the first place. So, let me explain it to you. Yoga helps in promoting the union of your mind and body. And it has its share of benefits.

Some of the direct benefits of practicing yoga are as follows:

  1. Yoga helps to reduce stress,
  2. Helps to reduce anxiety,
  3. Yoga helps to improve your concentration,
  4. Gives you peace of mind,
  5. Helps to fight depression,
  6. Improves sleep,
  7. Keeps you healthy,
  8. Makes your body flexible,
  9. Makes you feel good, and
  10. Keeps your heart healthy.

Meditation and Anxiety

The feeling of anxiety is very common in people. People usually get anxious whenever they face a new challenge in their lives and it is normal. When we feel anxious, we are filled with healthy emotions, which is a good thing.

However, when those emotions bottle up and get out of control, it takes the form of a disorder. Anxiety disorder may ruin your life if not treated in time. Seeking help and advice for doctor or a psychiatrist is highly adviced.

  • “An emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” – by American Psychological Association (APA)

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, worry ness, and nervousness when people come face to face with uncertain circumstances with uncertain outcomes. It is a human emotion that is characterized by difficult or worrying thoughts, uneasy state of mind, feeling of restlessness.

Anxiety triggers a certain chemical reaction within our body resulting in increased blood pressure, breathing difficulties, increased heartbeat, sweating, etc.

People get a feeling of anxiety or feel anxious in two different ways.

  • The most common way of becoming anxious is by bottling up of smaller stressful situations that one comes across in day to day life. These situations can be related to the financial crisis, work stress, failure, etc. They buildup overtime and reaches to a point of no suppression, resulting in anxiety.
  • Another way of people getting anxious is whenever they experience drastic changes in their lives, ones they’ve never experienced before. These situations might be related to a great loss i.e. loss of family members, loss of a job, financial setback, bankruptcy, etc. These situations are very difficult for an individual to overcome and they see no way out. Thus resulting in excessive anxiety.

Studies also suggest that anxiety is related to people’s personalities meaning some people are more likely to suffer from anxiety than others.

Meditation for Anxiety Control

Meditation, as you’ve already known, is a way of getting past one’s emotions. When you meditate, you have the utmost control of your thoughts and your emotions. Your mind is focused and calm as the ocean.

You can see past your limitations and search for solutions rather than going round and round worrying about things and fearing situations in front of you. You get the courage needed to face any and all the situations that you might come across. So, it is less likely that you’ll suffer from anxiety when you meditate.

On the other hand, when you’re anxious or are already suffering from anxiety, you could meditate to reduce anxiety to a point where you can handle things very lightly.

You could also practice the body scanning method of meditation which involves you paying attention to parts of your body in a gradual sequence, starting from feet to head.

Studies show that anxiety can be treated with the help of mindfulness meditation. It is however still a mystery to how mindfulness meditation triggers a certain brain mechanism that helps in stress reduction.

A Report On How Meditation Helps To Control Anxiety

Researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Health came up with an experiment to understand the brain mechanisms involved in mindfulness meditation-related to anxiety relief in an individual. For their research, they recruited fifteen healthy individuals as volunteers with a normal level of everyday anxiety.

The volunteers for the experiment had no prior experience of mindfulness practices. For the study, these volunteers participated in four 20 minute meditation session and were taught about the techniques of mindfulness meditation.

In the initial stage, they learned how to focus on their breath and body sensations and to non-judgementally evaluate distracting thoughts and emotions. Researchers observed that anxiety was significantly reduced in every session of mindfulness meditation.

Brain images captured by pule arterial spin labeling MRI showed that meditation-related anxiety relief was associated with activation of anterior cingulate cortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and anterior insula. These areas of the brain are related to executive function and the control of worrying. And mindfulness meditation worked on these three regions to relieve anxiety.

Meditation for Sleep

Sleep is an important aspect of our lives. Good night sleep heals your mind as well as your body, relieves fatigue, and fills you with the energy needed to live another day.

Regardless of how beneficial sleep might be to our health, about 30-50 adults out of 100 adults suffer from some kind of sleeping disorder. They have a hard time falling asleep and even when they do, their thoughts go wild and as a result, they experience a lack of energy, to start their day.

Sleeping disorder in people is mainly due to the stress they take in their day to day lives. Stressing as we mentioned above, causes tension and anxiety, making it difficult for the people to have good night sleep. It becomes even harder when people go to sleep with thoughts running crazy inside one’s mind.

One of the best-known remedies for sleeping disorders is meditation. Meditation helps to relax your body, set aside your worries and stops mind wander. It also helps you to gently bring when your mind wanders. You’ll feel inner peace deep inside you and your worries for the day will eventually be taken care of.

It is said that meditation does not just take care of your worries, but it also enhances sleeping hormones (melatonin), reduces blood pressure, and your heart rate.

As a result, when you meditate, you are more likely to have a good sleep. Your body will get recharged(filled with positive energy) from good night sleep and you’ll feel more than ready to face your day head-on.

Meditation Music

Meditation music is a type of music performed to help people meditate. It aids people in the practice of meditation. It often has religious content such as ‘Hindus’ prefer to meditate with the sound of “Om” chanting in the background. While ‘Buddhists’ prefer “Om Mani Padme Hum” mantra chants during meditation.

It is believed that meditating with meditation music helps to concentrate better and is very effective.

Meditation Music Helps to Relax Mind and Body

There’s no argument that music soothes one’s mind and soul. And spiritual music or meditation music works best to help relax your mind and body.

Meditational music is usually composed of 40–60 BPM(Beats Per Minute). It comes under the ‘Slower Tempo’ music category. And we know that slower tempo music helps to keep our mind at ease, relax the muscles, make us feel soothed and helps to release stress from the mind.

There are lots of meditation series available out there for you to get your hands on and try out first hand.

Meditation for Positive Energy

It might sound silly to you in the beginning, but our thoughts and our imaginations help shape the world around us. It is a proven fact and many scholars believe in the idea that the life we live in is the result of our thoughts and imaginations.

You might as well not believe in the idea that our thoughts and our imaginations are deeply intertwined with our reality. But the truth is, the nature and the direction of your thoughts shape your physical reality, your lifestyle, your relationship, your career, and more.

In simple words, if you are someone with positive characteristics, your life will be filled with happiness and joy. Similarly, if you are someone with negative characteristics, you are bound to experience pain and suffering.

What is a Positive Energy?

To understand positive energy, we must first understand the properties of energy. Energy is something that can neither be created nor be destroyed and can only be transferred from one form to another.

With this definition in mind, we could say energy is something that is already existing in this universe. In that sense, we can also say that everything and anything in this world is a mass of energy.

Positive energy is the positive vibration emitted by the source. It can be in the form of your actions, your thoughts, and your beliefs. You might be able to see in some cases while you only get to feel in other cases. So, we could say that in our case, positive energy is our thoughts, our beliefs, and our actions.

Sharing energy.
Sharing energy.

Unlike magnetism, the law of attraction is in play here. Thus positive energy is attracted to positive energy sources and vice versa.

Thus we come to the conclusion that when we fill ourselves with positive energy, positive things are attracted to us. In other words, we get attracted to positive energy sources.

Now that we understand what and how positive energy impacts our life, it’s time we understand why to meditate for positive energy.

Why Meditate for Positive Energy?

Well, the answer to this question is quite simple. Meditation helps to keep your emotions in check and makes you aware of your surroundings more than ever before. Your understanding of the world drastically changes.

You feel connected to every energy source there is in this entire universe. You know your role and you know who you are, that you are the universe and the universe is you.

Your thoughts start taking shape and you learn how to change your thoughts. And when you master your thoughts, you can then get what you want and not the other way around.

Meditation for Concentration

Over the years it is proven that meditation as a daily practice helps to improve memory power and concentration. When you practice mindfulness meditation in your day to day lives, it helps you to stay focused on a particular subject without any disturbances.

This, in turn, improves your memory power as well as your concentration power. So, if you’re looking to improve your concentration power, you better start meditating from today. It is really helpful when it comes to performing better in your day to day lives.

Meditation for Students

Meditation isn’t age-restricted. So, it can be practiced by people of any age and profession. That includes students as well. Students these days have a busy schedule to meet.

They are busy studying, learning and developing new skills, and growing in personality. They need an unending supply of energy and concentration to achieve their personal goals. And it is never easy for them especially when they need to cope up with the fast-changing world.

They ought to perform well academically, as well as develop their skills and creativity. It is not an easy task to do. Not even adults can keep up with all these tasks and still live on without giving up. They are indeed superheroes.

But like many superheroes, they too have their limits, limits of doing things. They cannot keep moving forward just like they want to in order to achieve their life goals. They too need some help, backup to help them push forward on their path even when they are outmatched. This is where meditation steps in.

With meditation, they can surpass their past limits and move on. They get the never-ending supply of energy that they require for their long and tiring journey. Their concentration power gets a boost and they can pass through obstacles without breaking a sweat.

It would be fair to say meditation helps students transform their lives and meet their personal goals.

Here are some of the proven benefits of meditation for students:

  • Increased IQ level
  • Better focus and better academic result result
  • Improved health and personality as a whole
  • Reduced stress and anxiety level
  • Creativity and innovation

Meditation for Work Success

Much like students, working people too have a busy schedule to meet. They need to work hard, meet deadlines, improve technical and well as interpersonal skills, face problems, and more importantly come out victorious.

It is by no means an easy life for them. There’s a lot of pressure building up working monotonously every single day, and what’s worse is that you ought to face competition from within and outside the organization.

You cannot relax even for a single moment and lower your guards, cuz if you do and someone finds it out, you might lose your job and your career is ruined. So paying attention to work is a must.

Colors symbolizing creativity.

To overcome these daily challenges and come out victorious, it is advised that you practice meditation on a regular basis.

Meditation helps you to understand the mind, enhance your learning capacity, fills you with the energy needed for you to keep going, makes you mentally strong so that you could face any and all challenges thrown your way.

It helps to keep your emotions in check so that nobody can benefit from it. Meditation helps to see the creative side of you which is helpful in excelling in your career. Lastly, meditation helps to reduce the work stress and keeps your anxiety level checked so that you could perform well.

Below are the proven ways meditation prepares you for work success:

  • Enhanced learning,
  • Makes you optimistic,
  • Improves your mentality,
  • Keeps check of your emotions,
  • Reduces work stress and anxiety,
  • It helps to see the creative side of you, etc.

Meditation at Work

Meditation at work is relatively a new approach and is only exercised by a handful of organizations. This concept of meditation in the workplace might sound odd to some. But it has its own benefits.

Studies conducted show that meditating at work significantly improves the productivity of the employees. It was especially true for those who were involved in mental tasks rather than manual labor.

Today, the practice of meditation at work is implemented by many IT companies around the world. They provide their employees with about 20 minutes of free time to meditate at the meditation space created within the organization.

This has proven to be highly beneficial for both the employees and the organizations. The purpose of meditation at work is to set aside all the stress and focus at work.

Meditation for Love

Love is the most beautiful of feelings and can be only felt by people with a pure heart. Love is a give and takes relationship. When in love, you give love to others and you receive love from others.

But there are certain prerequisites before one falls in love, like having a pure soul, without any traces of hatred. And this is only possible through meditation.

By meditating, you have the absolute control of all your emotions, and emotions make us who we are. Our actions are the result of our emotions. If your emotions are pure and without hatred, your actions will make others fall in love with you.

In the same way, your hatred could only make other people react in a similar fashion and all you get is hatred from everyone.

Meditation for Letting Go

As human beings, we sometimes feel desperate due to unfavorable circumstances in our lives. And as the days pass by, we’re full of hatred, bitterness, anger, sorrow, pain, and such other emotions. If these emotions are not dealt with properly, we might as well have a hard time living a happy life.

So, it is advised that you let go of your feelings and emotions before they bottle up to become a huge problem. Taking time to meditate could be a great way of letting go of your sorrows and emotions.
